The Fiji Football Association has reported a breach of protocol by one player after he tested positive for alcohol during the Extra Battle of the Giants tournament held in Labasa over the weekend. Despite this violation, Fiji FA CEO Mohammad Yusuf stated that the player will not face suspension but will instead receive counselling. He pointed out that the association is actively working on developing more formal policies concerning alcohol-related breaches.

In a concerning trend at the same tournament, three additional players tested positive for illegal substances in the first two days of competition. In these cases, the players will be immediately suspended, and the Fiji FA disciplinary committee will determine the necessary actions based on their findings. This pattern of positive tests follows a significant increase in drug-related cases observed during the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship, where 21 out of 180 tested players were found positive for substances.

The Fiji Football Association aims to strengthen its drug awareness initiatives and promote education on the risks associated with substance use, which is critical for fostering a healthier environment in Fijian football. The commitment to both education and strict enforcement reflects a proactive approach towards ensuring the integrity of the sport, generating optimism for improved compliance among athletes in the future.

This situation highlights an urgent need for continued focus on substance abuse education, and the positive twist here is that these steps may serve as a turning point for maintaining a clean and fair sporting environment in Fiji.
