The Fiji Football Association is set to broaden its reach by extending its Secondary School Futsal competitions to include the Northern Division’s Labasa Academy and the Western Division’s Ba Academy. Previously, these tournaments were exclusive to schools in the Southern Division, and this expansion marks a significant development in promoting futsal across Fiji.
Fiji FA CEO Mohammad Yusuf announced plans to launch competitions soon for both Under-16 and Under-18 boys and girls, signaling a commitment to nurturing youth talent in the sport. The popularity of school futsal is on the rise, with increased spectator attendance reflecting the growing enthusiasm for this vibrant competition. Many participants are also seen competing in the McDonald’s League, and several schools feature players from the national Fiji Under-15 squad, who have engaged in the OFC Youth Development Championship.
Currently, the matches take place every Saturday at the Fiji FA Vatuwaqa Academy grounds. The success and engagement witnessed at these events resonate with similar initiatives in the sporting community, such as the Extra Supermarket Fiji Southern Secondary Schools Futsal Championship, which has observed impressive growth in participation and competitive spirit since its inception.
In recent tournaments, teams have demonstrated outstanding capabilities, but beyond competition, these events foster essential values such as teamwork, discipline, and camaraderie among students, paving the way for personal growth. The commitment of the Fiji Football Association to broaden the competitive landscape highlights an optimistic vision for the future of futsal in the region, nurturing the next generation of athletes.
As the futsal landscape in Fiji continues to develop, it inspires hope not only for elevating competitive athletics but also for strengthening community ties and promoting an active lifestyle among the youth.
