Fiji Flying Fijians Triumph with Record-Breaking Pacific Nations Cup Win

The Fiji Water Flying Fijians delivered a commanding second-half performance to defeat Japan 41-17, securing their sixth Pacific Nations Cup title in the process.

Sevens star Ponipate Loganimasi enjoyed a remarkable debut, making two linebreaks and scoring twice in just 24 minutes of play.

Caleb Muntz, who earned the Player of the Tournament honors, made significant contributions throughout the match with his effective game management and flawless kicking.

The match began with Seungsin Lee and Muntz exchanging penalties, but it was Japan’s Dylan Riley who sparked excitement in the 20th minute. He evaded multiple tackles to execute a chip kick over a defender and won the race to score, with Lee converting the try. However, the anticipated surge from Japan never materialized.

Fiji thought they had opened their scoring in the 31st minute when Inia Tabuavou crossed the line, but the attempt was disallowed due to an earlier knock-on. Just a minute later, Tabuavou played a key role again, as a blocked grubber from Japan’s Harumichi Tatekawa set up winger Vuate Karawalevu for a try, leveling the score after Muntz’s conversion. At halftime, Japan was down to 14 men after hooker Mamoru Harada received a yellow card.

Despite having a player advantage, Fiji’s momentum grew after halftime. Muntz kicked another penalty to extend Fiji’s lead before Loganimasi scored from a well-executed team play, with Muntz converting from a challenging position. Muntz then engineered a stunning 50/22 kick, setting up an attacking opportunity for Fiji.

Tuisue added a try from close range, and an impressive offload from flanker Kitione Salawa allowed Karawalevu to score his second try. Loganimasi capped off his outstanding performance with another try, though Japan’s Malo Tuitama managed to score a consolation try late in the match, providing a small moment of celebration for the home fans.
