The Fiji Water Flying Fijians, under the direction of head coach Mick Byrne, are gearing up for the 2025 Autumn Internationals, seeking to field a completely injury-free squad. This follows the recent withdrawal of key players Lekima Tagitagivalu, Iosefo Masi, and Ponipate Loganimasi due to injuries. In their stead, Byrne has brought in Kitione Salawa, Joji Nasova, and Setareki Tuicuvu, emphasizing that only fully fit players will take the field at the start of the tour.
“It’s unfortunate for those players, but we need to ensure that we start the tour with those who are 100% fit,” Byrne remarked. By withdrawing the injured players, he aims to minimize disruptions during the team’s preparation. He assessed that while the impact on the squad dynamics may be minimal, the individuals affected are feeling the strain of being sidelined.
Nasova, who earned his spot following a remarkable debut in the Pacific Nations Cup earlier this year, showcases the potential and talent that Fiji has to offer. Byrne is optimistic about Nasova’s ability to develop into an international 15s superstar, noting his performance and adaptability displayed during the PNC.
The Flying Fijians have already touched down in England, with the overseas players joining their local counterparts for training sessions as they prepare for their first match against England on November 9 at Twickenham Stadium. The integration of new players into the squad, especially those with considerable experience, aligns with Byrne’s strategy to enhance team cohesion and competitiveness on the international stage.
This autumn tour not only reflects the depth of talent within Fijian rugby but also symbolizes a period of significant opportunities for emerging players. With an emphasis on fostering growth and resilience within the squad, the Flying Fijians hope to make a substantial impact in their upcoming fixtures. Their focus remains on showcasing their unique playing style while striving for success on this global stage, thus inspiring fans and future generations of rugby players.
