The Fiji Water Flying Fijians showcased a stellar second-half performance to defeat Japan 41-17, securing their record sixth Pacific Nations Cup title in front of a lively Rugby Stadium crowd.

Ponipate Loganimasi, making his debut, had an outstanding match, registering two linebreaks and scoring two tries in just 24 minutes on the field. Caleb Muntz was instrumental as the player of the tournament, contributing significantly to the team’s success through effective game management and flawless kicking from the tee.

The match began with Seungsin Lee and Muntz exchanging early penalties, but the action ignited in the 20th minute thanks to a spectacular try from Japan’s Dylan Riley. After skillfully evading multiple tackles, Riley chipped the ball over a defender, winning the race to score, with Lee converting the try.

However, Japan’s hopes of maintaining momentum were dashed when Fiji responded shortly after. Inia Tabuavou nearly scored in the 31st minute, but a knock-on was detected by the TMO. Undeterred, Fiji quickly leveled the score when Tabuavou’s clever play set up winger Vuate Karawalevu to kick through and touch down, leveling the score.

The match remained tied at halftime, with Japan down a player after hooker Mamoru Harada received a yellow card. Despite being a man down, Japan defended well, although Fiji’s substitutes created a significant impact in the final third of the match.

Muntz added to Fiji’s score with a penalty, followed by a beautifully constructed try for Loganimasi in the corner, which Muntz converted for a 10-point lead. Muntz then executed a remarkable 50/22 kick, giving Fiji a strong attacking position.

Shortly after, Tuisue powered over the line despite Japanese defenders, followed by an impressive offload from flanker Kitione Salawa, allowing Karawalevu to score his second try of the match. Loganimasi capped off his impressive debut with a try, skillfully evading a tackle from Japanese full-back Lee. Japan’s Malo Tuitama managed to score a consolation try late in the match, but it was not enough to change the outcome.

Fiji celebrated their sixth Pacific Nations Cup title with a commanding performance.
