Fiji’s Flying Fijians head coach, Mick Byrne, expressed determination as the team gears up for their upcoming match against Spain on Sunday, following a historic victory against Wales. The Fijians achieved a remarkable 24-19 win at the Principality Stadium, marking their first success over the Welsh team in Cardiff.
Despite a challenging first half that featured yellow cards for both teams and a red card for Semi Radradra, the Fijians persevered and showcased resilience in the second half. Byrne acknowledged the importance of this win, stating, “It’s a reset and go again,” highlighting the need to maintain momentum as they prepare for Spain, who are also coming off a strong performance.
Celebrating the players’ commitment and hard work, Byrne noted the significance of this win for those who have faced challenges in previous matches at this venue. He expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, particularly praising young fly-half Caleb Muntz, who contributed a try and four successful penalties, earning the Player of the Match title. Byrne emphasized Muntz’s growth and potential in Tier One rugby.
Looking ahead, Byrne expressed hopes for Fiji’s inclusion in the Nations Cup in 2026, which would serve as an important stepping stone toward the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The upcoming match against Spain will take place at 2 AM at José Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid, followed by a final match against Ireland on November 24.
This victory not only boosts Fiji’s confidence but also highlights their potential on the international stage as they trend upward amid their preparation for future competitions.
