Olympic silver medalist Ponipate Loganimasi had an impressive debut for the FIJI Water Flying Fijians, scoring two tries as the team defeated Japan 41-17 in the final of the Pacific Nations Cup held in Osaka last night.
Loganimasi entered the game in the second half, contributing to the Fijians’ strong performance. The first half was competitive, with both teams tied at 10-10 at halftime.
Japan opened the scoring with a penalty from fullback Seungsin Lee in the seventh minute. Caleb Muntz quickly equalized for Fiji, converting a well-placed kick just a minute later. However, Japan surged ahead as center Dylan Riley scored a remarkable try in the 19th minute, which was successfully converted, putting the hosts up 10-3.
Fiji attempted to respond, and though inside center Inia Tabuavou appeared to score, the try was disallowed after a TMO review. Nevertheless, winger Vuate Karawalevu managed to touch down in the 31st minute, and Muntz’s conversion brought the teams level at halftime.
In the second half, Fiji took control, with a Muntz penalty in the 54th minute giving them a 13-10 lead before Loganimasi made his mark, sprinting to score in the corner. Albert Tuisue followed with Fiji’s third converted try in the 63rd minute, and Karawalevu added another after a great assist from flanker Kitione Salawa.
Loganimasi capped off a stellar performance with his second try, sealing the victory for Fiji, while Japan managed a late consolation try to acknowledge their spirited effort.
