The Fiji Water Flying Fijians showcased a powerful second-half display to secure a convincing 41-17 victory over Japan, earning them a record-extending sixth Pacific Nations Cup title.
Sevens star Ponipate Loganimasi made an impressive debut, making two line breaks and scoring twice in his 24 minutes on the field.
Caleb Muntz, named Player of the Tournament, played a pivotal role, demonstrating exceptional game management and flawless kicking.
The match began with Seungsin Lee and Muntz exchanging early penalties before Japan’s Dylan Riley produced an outstanding play in the 20th minute. Riley evaded three tackles, chipped the ball over a defender, and won a race for the bouncing ball to score. Lee converted the try, sparking hopes for the home crowd, but Fiji quickly responded.
Fiji appeared to score in the 31st minute when Inia Tabuavou crossed the line, but a knock-on was detected by the TMO. However, less than a minute later, Fiji did find their first try, with Tabuavou assisting winger Vuate Karawalevu to score after a blocked kick. Muntz converted, bringing the score to 7-7 at halftime, with Japan down to 14 players after hooker Mamoru Harada received a yellow card.
Japan managed to hold off Fiji during Harada’s absence, but the Fijian substitutes made a significant impact in the last 30 minutes. Muntz added another penalty, followed by a team play that saw Loganimasi score in the right corner, with Muntz converting from a challenging angle to extend the lead to 10 points.
Muntz then executed a brilliant 50/22 kick, setting Fiji up for another attack. Shortly after, Tuisue powered over for a try, and an impressive offload from Kitione Salawa allowed Karawalevu to score his second.
Loganimasi finished strongly with a try after evading a tackle from Lee, while Japan’s Malo Tuitama scored a late consolation try to provide some cheer for the home supporters.
