The FIJI Water Flying Fijians were recognized as the Team of the Year during the 2024 Fiji Sports Awards Night held in Suva on Saturday. Under the guidance of head coach Mick Byrne, the team had a remarkable year, clinching the Pacific Nations Cup after a convincing 41-17 victory over Japan in the final and showcasing their strength in the November Tour by defeating Wales 24-19.
At the same event, Selesitino Ravutaumada, a winger for the Flying Fijians and Drua, was awarded Sportsman of the Year. Meanwhile, the Technical Official of the Year award was presented to referee Lavenia Racaca, celebrated for her officiating in both the HSBC World Sevens Series and the recent Paris Olympics. Notably, Mick Byrne missed out on the Coach of the Year accolade, which went to Freddy Fatiaki, the coach of Athletics Fiji.
This recognition of the Flying Fijians underscores their continuous growth and success in international rugby, building on the notable achievements from the previous year, where they also excelled in various competitions and received accolades. The consistent performance at crucial tournaments highlights the evolution of Fijian rugby on the global stage, instilling a sense of pride in the nation.
The awards serve not only as recognition but also as inspiration for athletes across all sports in Fiji, encouraging them to pursue excellence and contribute to the growing legacy of Fijian sports.
