Fiji Flying Fijians Soar to Final: Key Insights Revealed!

The FIJI Water Flying Fijians showcased a strong team effort by defeating the USA 22-3 in the Pacific Nations Cup semi-final held in Japan on Saturday night. After a hesitant start, Fiji found their rhythm, scoring three tries—two from player of the match Elia Canakaivata and one from halfback Frank Lomani. This victory secures their spot in the final, where they aim to defend the title they won last year.

Coach Mick Byrne emphasized the effectiveness of their set pieces and notable improvements in the team’s fitness as key elements of their success. “The set pieces are something we have really worked on. We functioned well at the World Cup, and we continue to improve on that,” Byrne remarked. He added, “You always try and look for ways of how you can improve a team. One of the things we are trying to enhance is the fitness level—our ability to play 80 minutes of football. So far, our second halves have been strong in this tournament.”

Captain Tevita Ikanivere, who received a yellow card for a dangerous tackle during the second half, identified set pieces as a dominant area for his team in the competition. “The set pieces are our key area. In the scrum, I would like to thank our back five; that’s where our drive comes from,” Ikanivere stated. He acknowledged his mistake as a captain while also expressing gratitude towards his teammates for maintaining strong defense even when they were down a player.

Fiji will face the host nation Japan in the final on Saturday, who secured their place by overpowering Samoa 49-27 in the other semi-final.
