Fiji Flying Fijians Ready to Soar Amid Controversy

The Fiji Water Flying Fijians, led by head coach Mick Byrne, are maintaining their focus despite the controversies surrounding the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) and former captain Waisea Nayacalevu. As the team prepares to face the host nation Japan in the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) final, Byrne emphasized that his players are completely dedicated to their objectives.

Byrne stated, “We’re just focused on what we’re doing here. The boys are really focused. The energy around the room is enormous, and we’ve only got eyes for Saturday.”

A significant decision in the lead-up to the final is the selection of Isaiah Armstrong as the starting fullback. Byrne praised Armstrong’s versatility, noting that he not only excels in the fullback position but also serves as an additional playmaker for the team.

“He manages the game well from fullback but also provides an opportunity to maintain our territory game,” Byrne explained. “If we are playing with speed and manage to cross the gain line, he can step in as the first receiver. I think he’s been performing very well in that fullback role.”

As the team readies for the match, Byrne expressed satisfaction with the players’ physical and mental states. He reflected on their preparation after a strong performance against the USA in the semifinals and mentioned that the hot and humid weather in Japan has been familiar for the squad.

With a robust team spirit and confidence, the Flying Fijians are set to take on Japan in what is anticipated to be a thrilling PNC final.
