FIJI Water Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is counting on his team’s fitness as they prepare for the Pacific Nations Cup semi-final against the United States Eagles this Saturday night at the Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.

“Fitness has been one of the players’ key strengths throughout their PNC campaign,” Byrne stated after the team’s arrival in Japan. He highlighted the players’ ability to continue performing late into games and to exert constant pressure on their opponents.

Byrne mentioned that the team has been focused on enhancing their teamwork and maintaining pressure, which poses a significant challenge. He noted that their training sessions have been demanding, indicating a need to address defensive challenges in the upcoming match.

“This week will present specific challenges concerning our defense,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of being physical, getting off the line effectively, and making strong tackles. Byrne acknowledged that while they are prepared, there might be occasional mistakes stemming from the recent adaptation to new game laws.

The coach stressed the necessity for disciplined play during the full 80 minutes of the semi-final. “Our preparations must remain consistent even as we train in two different countries,” he said, while noting that many players are keen to enhance their line speed in defense.

Byrne also emphasized the importance of retaining possession and maintaining discipline against the USA. “We can’t afford to give them any free opportunities with 50/50 offloads; this will be crucial for our game plan,” he remarked.

The mood within the camp is positive, with all players in good physical condition. Byrne highlighted the performances of young players Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula and Inia Tabuavou. He praised Armstrong-Ravula’s strength in territorial battles, particularly against a physically imposing opponent, and noted Tabuavou’s smooth integration into the inside center position.
