Fiji Flying Fijians Face Selection Depth Ahead of November Tests

Head coach Mick Byrne of the FIJI Water Flying Fijians has stated that the upcoming November Test series poses a unique selection challenge, illustrating the growing strength and depth of Fijian rugby talent. Byrne expressed that the decision-making process for squad announcements brings a mix of excitement and disappointment, as promising athletes who have demonstrated their skills may find themselves omitted from the final selection.

The increasing pool of talent, with players both from domestic leagues and abroad, is making Byrne’s job increasingly difficult. He emphasized that selections must take into account not only performance but also the adaptability of players and their long-term potential for the national team. “Sometimes people ask me, why didn’t you pick that player versus that player? Well, you could have picked that player—that’s the depth we have,” he shared.

A notable update is the emergence of several Under-20 players who are now making their mark in international rugby, with as many as eight entering the competitive French market. This influx of young talent is seen as a positive indicator for the future of Fijian rugby, even though it complicates current selection processes as the team gears up for the next Rugby World Cup.

The Flying Fijians are set to commence their November tour with a match against England at Twickenham Stadium on November 9, followed by a clash with France in Marseille on November 15, and a final match against Spain in Malaga on November 22. The team is looking forward to these matches as opportunities to showcase their growing talent and depth on an international stage.

Fans can anticipate an exciting series filled with both seasoned players and emerging stars, aiming to display the vibrant spirit and unique style characteristic of Fijian rugby. This balance of experience and youth not only bodes well for the immediate tests but also sets a hopeful trajectory for the future development of the sport in Fiji.
