Fiji’s head coach Mick Byrne emphasized the importance of elevating the Fiji Water Flying Fijians to a level of exceptional performance following their 17-52 defeat against Ireland in the final Autumn Nations Test match. In a post-match press conference, Byrne expressed the need to improve as they aim to gain respect from World Rugby over the next two years.

Byrne reflected on the match, noting that his team managed to score only two tries, supplemented by fly-half Caleb Muntz’s successful conversions and penalty kick. In contrast, Ireland showcased a powerful performance, scoring eight tries and benefiting from 17 penalties.

Captain Waisea Nayacalevu addressed concerns about earning respect from World Rugby and match officials, asserting that the team puts in the effort every week during training and adheres to their game plan. Nayacalevu acknowledged challenges with officiating but remained hopeful about the potential for more entertaining rugby if there were fair play calls, which could help the team build momentum.

This loss presents an opportunity for the Flying Fijians to reflect and regroup. With determination and the right strategies in place, they can harness their capabilities and work towards gaining recognition in the international rugby community. Fans can remain optimistic as the team sets its sights on future challenges.
