Families in Ba, Lautoka, and Tavua are facing significant challenges after heavy rainfall caused severe flooding, resulting in many homes being submerged. Those residing in low-lying areas have been forced to seek shelter elsewhere, as their houses are no longer safe for occupancy.
Apolosi Lewaqai, the Divisional Commissioner for Police in the Western region, provided updates on the situation today. He shared an optimistic outlook, noting that floodwaters are beginning to recede in the affected areas, bringing some relief to local residents. “As of now the water is receding due to the heavy rain last night in Lautoka, Ba, and Tavua. Some families have moved to evacuation centers,” Lewaqai reported. He also mentioned that assistance is being provided for families awaiting relocation to safer areas.
Moreover, Lewaqai expressed hope that normalcy would soon return for the community. “Today, they will go back to normal, and we are working to help families and businesses reach this stage,” he affirmed.
