The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is appealing to the public to take greater initiative regarding waste disposal, as litter continues to clog drainage systems, exacerbating flooding during heavy rain. Despite consistent maintenance efforts, including regular clean-ups and high-pressure jetting of drains, the authorities have reported that household rubbish remains a significant contributor to congestion.
Recent inspections following a heavy rainfall event revealed that items such as plastic bottles, takeaway containers, and food wrappers are primarily obstructing culverts and catch pits. These blockages not only disrupt the flow of water but also lead to increased pavement damage, raising repair costs and compromising road conditions.
In light of this, the FRA is urging communities to halt illegal dumping practices, appropriately dispose of their waste, and assist in keeping drains clear. Such measures are vital for mitigating flood effects, protecting infrastructure, and ensuring motorist safety during wet seasons.
Furthermore, drivers are reminded to exercise caution in areas prone to flooding, to follow posted signs, and to adhere to speed limits for their safety and the safety of others. Additional information can be accessed by contacting the FRA through its toll-free number, 5720, available Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.
The FRA emphasizes that a cleaner and safer Fiji relies on the collective efforts of everyone in the community. By working together to maintain cleanliness and proper waste disposal, residents can contribute significantly to enhancing the wellbeing of their environment.
