Fiji’s national rugby team, the Flying Fijians, is gearing up for their third Test against Spain after a historic 24-19 victory over Wales at Principality Stadium, marking their first win against the Welsh in Cardiff. Head coach Mick Byrne expressed optimism as the team prepares for the upcoming match.
Despite a challenging first half, which saw both teams receiving yellow cards, and a red card for Fijian center Semi Radradra, the Flying Fijians managed to overcome Wales’ early lead. Byrne emphasized the importance of resetting and maintaining their form as they look ahead to play Spain, who are also coming off a strong performance.
Byrne was thrilled for his players, acknowledging the effort they put in to secure this landmark win. He praised Caleb Muntz, the player of the match, for his remarkable performance, including a try and four successful penalties. Byrne noted that Muntz is gradually making his mark in Tier One rugby, a commendable feat given his limited experience.
Looking further ahead, Byrne expressed a desire for Fiji’s inclusion in the Nations Cup in 2026, which would provide valuable experience leading into the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The Flying Fijians will face Spain early Sunday morning at José Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid, followed by a final match against Ireland on November 24.
This victory serves as a significant boost for the Flying Fijians and highlights their potential on the international stage, opening doors for future successes in rugby. The team’s ability to battle back from adversity and perform at a high level reflects a promising future for Fijian rugby.
