Governor Ariff Ali of the Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) has announced the appointment of Caroline Pickering as the new Director of the Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), a position she will officially assume on January 1, 2025. This prestigious appointment comes following the retirement of Razim Buksh from the role earlier this year.

As the current Manager of Policy and Compliance at the Fiji FIU, Pickering brings over 25 years of professional experience and expertise in financial regulation. She is commended for her strategic leadership skills and her ability to navigate and address challenges within Fiji’s increasingly digital financial landscape. The Governor expressed confidence in her capability to lead the FIU into its next growth phase, collaborating with various partners in both the government and private sectors.

Since joining the Fiji FIU in 2006, Pickering has played a crucial role in establishing the regulatory and supervisory framework aimed at combating money laundering and financial crime in Fiji. Her vast experience includes working closely with financial institutions and government bodies to implement protections against potential financial crimes. She has also served in an acting director capacity multiple times, showcasing her leadership capabilities.

Before her tenure at the FIU, Pickering worked for over nine years in the Office of the Auditor-General, where she held various audit and leadership positions. She holds a degree in accounting and economics from the University of the South Pacific and is a member of the Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants.

The Governor has offered his congratulations to Pickering and anticipates her valuable contributions toward enhancing the safety and integrity of Fiji’s financial system through her leadership in the fight against money laundering.

Summary: Caroline Pickering will become the new Director of the Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit starting January 1, 2025, succeeding Razim Buksh who retired earlier this year. With over 25 years of experience, she aims to strengthen Fiji’s framework against money laundering and financial crime, building on her extensive background in finance and regulation.
