The dates for the Fiji Finals in 2025 have created a scheduling conflict with a Super Rugby Pacific match set to take place in Suva during May. This clash has prompted the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association (FSSAA) and the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua to collaborate on finding a resolution.
The Drua had announced their home game schedule for the 2025 season on September 30, 2024, while the Ministry of Education revealed the academic calendar a week later on October 8. Traditionally, the annual Coca-Cola Games are held during the first week of May, corresponding with the first school term break, which in 2025 is set for May 2. As a result, the final day of the Fiji Finals, scheduled for May 3, conflicts with the Drua’s match against the Reds at HFC Bank Stadium.
Fijian Drua’s general manager of commercial operations, Shane Hussein, mentioned that discussions with the FSSAA and the Fiji Sports Council are ongoing to seek a mutually beneficial solution. Various options are being considered, including the possibility of moving the Fiji Finals earlier in the week.
Biu Colati, the Coke Games competition director, indicated that the discussions have been productive and that an agreement may be reached by early January. Colati noted that the Drua sees this as a chance for local fans to enjoy the games, particularly since the next match will be played on the opposite side of the island.
This scheduling conflict is not new, as a similar issue arose in 2023, prompting the FSSAA to move the meet from May to the end of April.
Overall, the proactive approach of both organizations suggests a commitment to finding a solution that accommodates both the athletic events and the fans, fostering a sense of community engagement and sportsmanship. The resolution of this clash will not only benefit the athletes involved but will also enhance the overall sporting experience for fans in Fiji.
