Ratu Sukuna Memorial School (RSMS) secured the first gold medal on the second day of the Fiji Finals, thanks to an impressive performance by athlete Loata Lewageena in the intermediate girls’ discus throw. Lewageena’s remarkable throw reached a distance of 46.02 meters, shattering the previous record of 42.54 meters, which was held by Brienna Rabakena from Swami Vivekananda College.

Entering the Fiji Finals with her best throw of 42.55 meters achieved at the Suva Zone 1 competition, Lewageena had already demonstrated the potential to break records. Overcoming significant self-doubt, she attributed her success to her faith in God and the unwavering support of her coaches and family. “Today was a very hard day for me… I managed to just focus on myself and my technique,” she shared, highlighting her mental preparation which played a key role in her victory.

With this achievement, Lewageena not only claimed her second gold medal of the event but also contributed to RSMS’s prominence in the competition. Meanwhile, Maryann Macedru from St. Joseph’s Secondary School took silver with a throw of 38.66 meters, followed closely by Sinairi Erasito, who earned bronze with a distance of 37.24 meters.

Lewageena’s triumph reflects the growing trend of record-breaking performances among young athletes in Fiji. Following the same pattern, other athletes from various schools have been excelling, building a narrative of resilience and achievement in Fijian sports. The celebrations surrounding these performances foster a sense of community pride and hope for the future, casting a bright outlook on athletics in Fiji.
