The Vodafone Fijiana XV team showcased an impressive performance against Hong Kong China, securing a dominant 38-3 victory in their opening match, setting the stage for their upcoming WXV3 clash against Samoa on October 12 in Dubai.
Coach Mosese Rauluni noted that the team was somewhat sluggish in the first half, allowing their opponents too much possession and conceding penalties. However, he felt the squad took advantage of their chances more effectively in the second half, despite making some errors that created pressure. Rauluni expressed relief at getting a positive result following recent losses to Scotland and the Netherlands, stating that the win boosts the players’ confidence heading into the challenging match against Samoa. He emphasized the need for strong set-pieces and improved physicality in both ball carries and defense for the upcoming encounter.
Captain Karalaini Naisewa, who scored two tries, praised the team’s overall performance and highlighted that the weather conditions in Dubai are similar to those at home. She acknowledged that Samoa will be a tough opponent and committed to coming out strong. Naisewa also stressed the importance of enhancing fitness levels to secure victory in the next match.
Fiji’s scoring started with prop Anasimeci Korovata breaking through the Hong Kong China defense for the first try, followed by another try from sevens player Kolora Lomani, although both conversions were missed. Hong Kong China managed to get on the board with a penalty kick by fly-half Fung Hoi Ching. Naisewa added to the score with a try from a maul, and the team continued to build their lead, eventually finishing the match with Naisewa scoring her second try and Tisolo converting to secure a commanding 38-3 win.
