Fiji achieved its second draw in the MSG Prime Ministers Cup held in Honiara, Solomon Islands, as they fought back to secure a 1-1 tie against Papua New Guinea. Coached by Marika Rodu, Fiji had previously drawn their opening match 1-1 against Vanuatu on Thursday.
Papua New Guinea took an early lead in the 23rd minute courtesy of veteran player Raymond Gunemba. However, Fiji equalized in the 73rd minute, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Christopher Wasasala and Thomas Dunn in creating a scoring opportunity. Dunn delivered a precise pass to Wasasala, who skillfully maneuvered past the goalkeeper before setting up Sairusi Nalaubu for a straightforward tap-in. Nalaubu’s goal marked his second in the tournament.
The match faced a brief interruption of 15 minutes due to thunderstorms and lightning but resumed once the weather improved, allowing the players to complete the remaining six minutes of regular and additional time.
This resilience demonstrates Fiji’s determination and adaptability in facing challenging conditions, suggesting a positive outlook for the team as they continue in the tournament. Fans can remain hopeful that such performances will lead to more success in upcoming matches.
