The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has responded to recent criticisms regarding the electricity tariff consultations taking place in the Northern Division, affirming that these sessions are more than mere formalities. The regulator emphasized that the consultations are intended for meaningful engagement with Fijians, allowing individuals to express their opinions and influence the tariff submissions directly.
CEO Senikavika Jiuta stated, “This is not a box-ticking exercise. We are conducting face-to-face consultations where we meet directly with members of the public to explicitly ask for their feedback.” She assured that the feedback gathered would be diligently recorded to address any public concerns.
The consultations are not limited to the Northern Division but are also being conducted in the Western and Central Divisions. Jiuta will personally attend the upcoming session in Nadi at the FNPF plaza, scheduled from 10 am to 3 pm, to connect with community members.
Additionally, the FCCC has established a 21-day period for all stakeholders to submit their opinions. In an effort to assist consumers in understanding the implications of the proposed tariff changes, the FCCC has introduced a “Bill Calculator.” This tool enables users to input their energy consumption and estimate how potential changes might affect their electricity bills.
The engagement of the FCCC in this manner reflects a commitment to transparency and consumer involvement in vital energy pricing discussions. By actively seeking public input, the Commission aims to ensure that the voices of Fijians are integral to shaping future tariff decisions.
