For many families, the festive season symbolizes joy and celebration, but for 54-year-old Sireli Satavu, it marks an exciting new chapter in his farming journey. Hailing from Nahigatoka and now residing in Lawai, Mr. Satavu is poised to invest in farming machinery for the first time as he embarks on a journey into dalo farming.

Having cultivated an affinity for agriculture from a young age while working alongside his father, Mr. Satavu has dedicated most of his life to planting a variety of seasonal crops, including cassava, cabbage, capsicum, tomatoes, long beans, and French beans. He recalls a time when he planted 100 lines of cassava, receiving orders from customers who would pick up the crop the following day. “Back then, it was $50 a bag. Now, it’s up to $120,” he noted, highlighting the rising value of his crops.

Despite living in an area where many landowners do not engage in farming, Mr. Satavu has effectively supported his family of five through his small-scale agricultural practices, selling produce both from home and at local markets. Recently, he visited an agriculture supplier and received quotes for two machines essential for his new endeavor—one costing around $666 and the other exceeding $1,700. Mr. Satavu believes that acquiring this equipment will enable him to start cultivating dalo, a crop not widely grown in his region.

“I want to do proper farming now. I see people leaving their jobs to commit to full-time farming; that’s what I aspire to do as well,” he expressed. For him, Christmas is not about gifts or festivities but about making an investment—a significant step toward enhancing and modernizing his farm.

“God provided for you to come here,” he said with a smile, embodying a spirit of gratitude and optimism. This festive season, Mr. Satavu is determined to expand his farming operations and make significant strides in his agricultural journey, showcasing a remarkable blend of resilience and ambition in the face of challenges. His story serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of hard work and faith in pursuing one’s dreams.
