The Fiji Men’s Development team narrowly missed out on victory in the final of the 2024 Oceania 7s tournament held in Honiara, Solomon Islands, losing to Samoa with a score of 17-12 in extra time.
Samoa took the lead early in the game, finishing the first half at 5-0. They managed to increase their advantage shortly after the break. However, Fiji staged a determined comeback, leveling the match with a try from Iosefo Namoce. Unfortunately for Fiji, Solomoni Rauqe’s conversion attempt from a prime position fell short, leading to the match going into additional time.
As the extra period began, Samoa quickly capitalized on the opportunity, securing the winning try shortly after the restart.
On a positive note, Tonga secured third place by defeating Tuvalu 24-19, also in extra time, showcasing the competitiveness of the tournament.
Fiji’s strong performance throughout the tournament, especially their ability to rally in tough situations, bodes well for their future endeavors in rugby sevens. This experience will undoubtedly serve as a foundation for growth and development in upcoming competitions.
