The Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI Sangam) has voiced strong condemnation regarding derogatory remarks made by a pastor against both Hindu and Muslim communities. This statement reflects a growing concern among religious organizations in Fiji regarding the impact of such inflammatory comments on the nation’s multicultural identity.
In their official statement, TISI Sangam expressed deep disappointment over the distribution of a video that contains offensive remarks, branding them as an attack on the very essence of Fiji’s diversity and harmony. TISI Sangam President, Parveen Bala, emphasized that such rhetoric not only offends devotees but also threatens the values of respect and unity that underpin Fijian society. Bala highlighted the teachings of the organization’s founder, Sadhu Kuppuswamy, which advocate for harmony and communal service.
Echoing similar sentiments, the Fiji Muslim League (FML) has also spoken out against the inflammatory comments, stressing the need for mutual respect across various faiths. FML President Basheer Ahmed noted that the negative impact of such remarks on interfaith relationships is detrimental to Fiji’s commitment to unity. Other organizations, including the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha and the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha, have condemned the remarks as well, emphasizing the importance of interfaith dialogue and cooperation in the face of rising intolerance.
In response to these incidents, TISI Sangam urged Fijians to choose forgiveness and reject acts of retaliation, stressing support for the ongoing investigation by the Fiji Police Force. The organization, along with others, advocates for justice to be served under the law while encouraging a dialogue centered around peace, love, and understanding.
Leaders across different communities are uniting in their commitment to a peaceful Fiji, aspiring to uphold the nation’s legacy of respect and diversity. This collective response to derogatory speech reflects a hopeful stance toward fostering stronger bonds among Fiji’s various religious groups, reinforcing that the strength of the nation lies in its commitment to embracing differences rather than succumbing to division.
