Severe flooding has caused multiple road closures across Fiji, particularly affecting the Central, Western, and Northern Divisions. The country is currently experiencing heavy rains and flash flooding, which has rendered Nadi town impassable, marking a challenging start to Christmas Day for many residents.
Authorities have issued warnings advising individuals to exercise utmost caution when traveling and to respect all road closures. Fiji Police are urging those living in flood-prone areas between Sigatoka and Nausori to seek higher ground for safety. The Fiji Metservice has maintained a heavy rain warning for the Northern Division, emphasizing that persistent heavy rainfall could lead to further flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and prone areas.
On Thursday morning, a flash flood warning was activated for several regions, including Dreketilailai, Nayarabale, Vuniika, Qawa, Cawaira, Vunivau, and Labasa town, as well as an alert for Central Eastern division. Rainfall figures are significant, with Dreketilailai recording 57.5mm and Nayarabale 55mm within just three hours. Over a 24-hour period, Nayarabale saw a total of 104mm of rain.
The ongoing adverse weather, linked to a trough of low pressure, is expected to persist throughout the day, particularly impacting the northern regions of the nation. For the latest updates and weather information, residents are encouraged to check the Fiji Metservice website.
Despite the current challenges posed by the weather, Fijians are known for their resilience and capacity to come together in tough times. It’s a reminder of community strength in adversity, as many rally to support each other and take precautions to stay safe. The hope is for improved conditions soon, allowing the country to recover and rebuild from the effects of the flooding.
