Fiji Faces Water Sector Crisis as Skilled Staff Exodus Continues

Since 2022, more than 100 employees have left the Water Authority of Fiji, resulting in a significant skills and competency gap within the workforce. This issue was emphasized during WAF’s “Annual Customer Forum” held in Suva this morning.

WAF’s Chief Operating Officer, Seru Soderberg, noted that the departures include 65 individuals from critical areas such as electrical and mechanical trades, technical positions, laboratory roles, GIS, surveying, land valuation, and finance. He pointed out that these skilled workers are migrating to opportunities in Australia and New Zealand.

Chief Strategy and Information Officer Seymour Singh highlighted the direct repercussions that this staff loss has on the water sector, emphasizing the need for urgent attention. He also mentioned that WAF faces competition not just from international markets but also from other sectors within Fiji.

The WAF Annual Customer Forum aims to provide updates on the authority’s developments and projects, discuss relevant issues, and gather feedback regarding service delivery. The forum is also intended to educate the public and foster awareness about water conservation and waste management, encouraging positive behavioral changes in society related to WAF’s services.
