The ongoing water crisis in several Fijian villages, particularly pronounced on Yanuca Island in Serua, is being taken seriously by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who acknowledges that solutions will not come instantly. Rabuka’s comments follow reports of severe water shortages that led to the closure of a local school, leaving 59 students without classes since last Friday.
The prime minister indicated that the government is actively pursuing long-term solutions to address the crisis. “We aim to assess existing boreholes, explore underground aquifers, and find new water sources where current supplies have dried up,” he stated. Rabuka emphasized the right to clean water as a fundamental human need and aligned this commitment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. His assurance hints at a determined effort to alleviate the hardships faced by affected communities.
Local resident Rusiate Balenagasau voiced the urgent need for authorities to implement lasting solutions, stressing that the school’s closure due to a lack of water has made it difficult for students and teachers alike.
