Fiji is facing a significant public health challenge as the country reported 1,583 new HIV cases in 2024, including 126 deaths attributed to the virus. Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu disclosed these figures during a Development Partner Roundtable on Fiji’s HIV Outbreak Response meeting, highlighting the urgency for action in addressing the HIV epidemic.

Most newly diagnosed cases came from the Central Division, which accounted for almost 70 percent of infections. Alarmingly, the demographic most affected is individuals aged 20 to 29, and men represented about 70 percent of the new diagnoses. Despite the rising statistics, nearly half of those diagnosed have linked to healthcare services, and over 90 percent have started antiretroviral treatment.

A concurrent concern is the rise in tuberculosis and HIV co-infections; 160 cases were recorded last year. In response to this multifaceted health crisis, the Fijian government has committed nearly $6 million to combat HIV, funding medicines, testing, and community outreach programs.

Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized the importance of proactive testing, urging Fijians to know their HIV status. He assured the public that HIV is not a death sentence and called for a strong, coordinated effort involving all sectors of society to combat the stigma and challenges surrounding HIV care.

The government is not only focusing on treatment but is also addressing the underlying social issues, including the impact of drug use, which has been linked to the rising infection rates. The collaborative effort emphasized by the Minister aims to empower communities, reduce stigma, and ensure that individuals affected by HIV are supported and can receive adequate care.

This proactive approach signals a hopeful outlook for Fiji, as increased awareness and community involvement can potentially reverse the upward trend of HIV infections and enhance the quality of life for those living with the virus. By fostering a supportive environment and emphasizing comprehensive health strategies, there is potential for substantial improvement in managing HIV within the community.
