Fiji is currently experiencing a significant surge in traffic congestion, particularly along the busy Suva-Nausori corridor. Recent data indicates that over 10,000 new vehicles have been registered in the past two years, raising the total vehicle count to 154,000 in a nation with a population of less than one million. This alarming trend has been highlighted by Land Transport Authority (LTA) CEO Irimaia Rokosawa, who has pointed out the pressing need for effective solutions to address the worsening traffic conditions.
Residents have expressed their frustrations, with many proposing various measures to alleviate congestion. Suggestions include adjusting school hours and staggering work schedules to ease traffic flow during peak hours. Such community engagement is becoming increasingly vital as the number of vehicles continues to rise, leading to longer and more chaotic commutes for many.
Rokosawa emphasized the necessity of implementing policies that regulate vehicle ownership and manage the importation of used cars. He acknowledged that while public transport options exist, they often do not meet the complete needs of commuters, resulting in a heavier reliance on personal vehicles.
