Further evaluations and discussions are underway concerning the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (FCCC) proposal to raise electricity tariffs by 24.2 percent, according to Ro Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Public Works. In a statement made to the press, Ro Filipe confirmed that additional consultations are in progress, and a formal announcement will be issued soon.
Ro Filipe previously expressed his discontent over the FCCC’s approval of the tariff increase, emphasizing that the government believes there should have been comprehensive consultations and more time allowed before any new rates are implemented.
The leader of the Fiji Labour Party (FLP), Mahendra Chaudhry, has disputed the FCCC’s assertion that the tariff increases followed extensive nationwide discussions. He indicated that consultations with various businesses do not reflect broad support for the increases and criticized the FCCC for not following standard procedures, which typically involve publicizing proposed changes and allowing for community feedback before making any decisions.
Echoing similar sentiments, Sila Balawa, the general secretary of the People’s Alliance Party (PAP), also expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed increase. He argued that calls for further consultation should be seen as an essential aspect of responsible governance, ensuring that decisions are aligned with the realities of households and small businesses affected by such changes. Balawa contended that true regulatory independence involves consideration of public concern and real-life implications, rather than solely relying on statistical analyses.
The PAP emphasized the importance of meaningful engagement with the public, stating that effective consultation helps to build trust and ensures that consumer interests remain at the forefront of regulatory processes.
In response to the growing concerns, the FCCC has scheduled nationwide Electricity Tariff Awareness Sessions that will continue through the end of this month, aiming to inform the public and gather further input on the proposed tariff changes. These initiatives reflect a willingness to engage with the community and address their concerns in a transparent manner.
