In September, the Fiji Police Force received reports of 118 serious sexual offenses. Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci indicated that the most frequently reported offenses included rape, indecent assault, sexual assault, and the abduction of minors. Additionally, six police officers have been charged with serious crimes, including abuse of office, assault causing actual bodily harm, deceitful financial gain, illegal drug possession, and wrongful confinement.
Raikaci also noted that police officers themselves are not immune to becoming victims while performing their duties. In September, 171 officers reported being victims in 219 incidents, with 33 cases involving multiple offenses, such as serious assaults and resisting arrest.
Throughout the month, a total of 838 individuals were charged with various crimes, 48 of whom were juveniles. Offenders ranged in age from 18 to over 56 years, with the largest group being those aged 18 to 35, totaling 486 individuals.
The Acting Commissioner urged communities to collaborate with the Fiji Police Force to combat crime. He expressed concern over the continued involvement of juveniles in criminal activities, stressing the negative impact on their education and future. Raikaci called for support from families and communities to mentor young people effectively.
As the festive season approaches, the Fiji Police Force plans to enhance its operations and emphasized the need for everyone to respect the law to ensure safer communities.
