The Ministry of Health has reported a total of 10,969 confirmed dengue cases across Fiji from January 1 to June 15, correlating with a significant outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease. The Western Division has recorded the highest incidence with 4,960 cases, followed by the Central Division with 2,868 cases, the Northern Division at 2,867 cases, and the Eastern Division with 274 cases. Tragically, this outbreak has resulted in eight fatalities, five of which occurred in the Western Division, three in the North, and none in the East.

Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu informed Parliament that during this same period, 2,234 individuals were hospitalized due to complications from dengue, with 1,964 admissions originating from the Western Division alone. Currently, there are 562 active cases under surveillance in Fiji.

Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized that the declaration of outbreaks in the affected divisions was based on a substantial increase in case numbers that exceeded normal trends. To combat this public health challenge, the Ministry of Health is taking a multidisciplinary approach, working in collaboration with municipal councils and the Ministry of Town and Country Planning to implement cleanup and spraying initiatives aimed at controlling the mosquito population.

This proactive response includes increased public awareness and community involvement to mitigate the impact of the disease. In light of Fiji’s history with dengue, particularly during the rainy season, these measures reflect a dedication to safeguarding public health. Efforts to eliminate potential breeding sites and encourage prompt medical attention for symptoms of dengue remain essential.

The current situation presents a hopeful outlook, as sustained public cooperation and health interventions have shown promise in managing disease outbreaks in the past. Continued vigilance from the community and the government may help control the spread of dengue fever during this critical period and ultimately protect the health and well-being of residents in affected areas.
