Nearly 650 scam cases are currently under investigation by the Fiji Police Force, according to Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga. This alarming statistic was shared during a Regional Workshop hosted by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) at Shangri-La Yanuca Island in Nadroga.

Mr. Turaga recounted a particularly distressing case involving a woman from Western Division who became a victim of cyber extortion, losing close to half a million dollars to an online scam. The organized crime involved threats to leak her intimate photos online, revealing the increasing risks associated with cybercrime in Fiji.

The victim believed she was communicating with someone outside the country, only to later discover that her scammer was based locally. Over several months, the perpetrator extorted money, threatening to publish compromising images unless a ransom was paid. The Minister emphasized that this crime exemplifies a worrying trend, as women looking for companionship online are often targeted by deceitful individuals.

Additionally, Mr. Turaga informed attendees about another significant scam related to a fraudulent M-Paisa transaction scheme tied to fake eBay listings, which has caused victims to lose more than $600,000.

In response to the rising threat of cybercrime, the Ministry is working to enhance legal frameworks and improve capabilities within law enforcement agencies. Collaborating with international partners, the ODPP is focusing on capacity building through training and knowledge-sharing initiatives aimed at better equipping local authorities to combat cybercrime effectively.

“We are dedicated to strengthening our response to cybercrime and ensuring that law enforcement and legal practitioners are prepared for these ongoing challenges,” concluded Mr. Turaga. His remarks underscore the critical need for adaptation as cybercriminals evolve their tactics.

Despite the serious nature of these issues, the efforts being put forth by the Ministry and its partners provide hope for a collective response to combatting cybercrime, fostering a safer digital environment for all Fijians. Continued awareness and education will be essential in empowering individuals to protect themselves from these growing threats.
