In Fiji, transient ischemic strokes and hemorrhagic strokes rank among the most prevalent forms of stroke, prompting urgent health discussions across the nation. Elizabeth Wong, President of Counterstroke Fiji, elaborates on the two fundamental types of strokes: those caused by blockages in blood vessels and those resulting from burst vessels.

These strokes are not only common but are increasingly influenced by various lifestyle factors, including poor dietary choices, insufficient physical activity, smoking, and unmanaged medical conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. According to Counterstroke Fiji, strokes are the third leading cause of death in the country, impacting individuals across all age groups and presenting a significant public health concern.

Wong points out a generational shift regarding lifestyle and dietary habits, stating, “Now these two generations are younger because the environment they grow up in is quite different. The way they eat is different from how we ate, and their lifestyles are different. So it is very much a lifestyle issue.”

To combat this growing threat, Wong emphasizes the importance of awareness, early detection, and the adoption of healthier lifestyle choices. Despite these preventive measures, strokes persist in affecting many Fijians, leading to profound effects on families.

Margaret Reid-Rounds, Chair of the NGO Coalition, encourages communities to embrace healthier lifestyles and highlights the coalition’s role in disseminating vital information for public benefit. She expresses a commitment to collective efforts, stating, “Counterstroke Fiji became involved because we feel strongly that we all need to work together. The Fiji Wellness Coalition logo represents holding hands and reaching out into the community. We must continue to work together.”

Counterstroke Fiji remains dedicated to educating the public, executing outreach programs, and offering support to stroke survivors, aiming to diminish the impact of strokes and foster healthier living throughout Fiji. This proactive approach underlines the potential for positive change as communities unite to tackle this pressing health issue.
