Fiji Faces Silent Killer: The Non-Communicable Disease Crisis

Fiji is facing a significant health crisis, as Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) now account for 80% of all deaths in the nation and 40% of premature deaths, according to Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services. These alarming statistics, largely attributed to lifestyle choices, reflect a global trend. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that NCDs are responsible for 71% of all deaths worldwide, with low- and middle-income countries like Fiji experiencing a disproportionate impact.

Furthermore, the United Nations indicates that 85% of premature deaths due to NCDs occur in these regions. In Fiji, the leading causes of death include circulatory diseases, diabetes, and cancers, affecting both genders. The Republic of Fiji Vital Statistics Report for 2016 to 2021 underlines the seriousness of the situation, showing that NCDs are the primary cause of death across all age demographics.

This health crisis places a heavy burden on Fiji’s healthcare system, with the costs associated with NCD-related deaths and disabilities estimated at 591 million Fijian dollars in 2019. The main contributors to this issue are well identified: poor diet, tobacco use, lack of physical activity, and excessive alcohol consumption. Dr. Lalabalavu highlights that these risk factors can be modified.

Countries around the world have successfully reduced the prevalence of NCDs through comprehensive approaches that Fiji could implement. For example, Finland’s nationwide salt reduction campaign has significantly decreased hypertension rates, while Australia’s stringent tobacco control measures, including plain packaging and increased taxes, have led to a substantial decline in smoking rates. Additionally, Mexico’s introduction of a sugar tax resulted in a 7.6% decrease in sugary drink consumption within the first two years.

Fiji’s Wellness Division is already in the process of gathering vital data to inform health promotion and prevention strategies. However, tackling the NCD epidemic necessitates a concerted effort, strong policy measures, and increased public awareness. The importance of making healthier lifestyle choices today cannot be overstated in securing a healthier future for all.
