Fiji is currently under a heavy rain warning as an active trough of low pressure brings significant cloud cover and rainfall to the area. Flood warnings are in effect for areas near the Ba, Nasivi (Tavua), and Nakauvadra (Rakiraki) rivers, with an additional flood alert for flood-prone regions adjacent to all major rivers. The country also faces flash flood warnings for low-lying areas.
A strong wind warning has been issued for coastal areas in the western and northern parts of Viti Levu, which includes regions from Sigatoka to Nadi, Lautoka, Ba through Tavua to Rakiraki, as well as the interior areas of Ba, Ra, Nadroga/Navosa, Serua/Namosi, Naitasiri, and Tailevu North provinces, along with the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Vatulele, Kadavu, and surrounding smaller islands.
Another active trough of low pressure is forecast to approach from the west, expected to result in additional rainfall across the Fiji group from tomorrow through Sunday. With the ground already saturated, there are concerns about flash flooding in more areas and small streams nationwide. Rising water levels in major rivers are anticipated, with an increased risk of river flooding, particularly during high tides.
The Fiji Meteorological Service is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates on warnings and forecasts as conditions develop.
In challenging weather events such as this, it is essential for communities to stay informed and prepared. Emergency services and meteorological authorities play a crucial role in ensuring public safety, and residents are encouraged to heed warnings and take necessary precautions. With the cooperation of officials and communities, the impacts of such weather systems can be effectively managed.
