The Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, has urged Fijians to limit their movements as heavy rainfall and flooding impact the country. During a press conference at the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), Mr. Ditoka stressed the need for public gatherings to be canceled and advised everyone to stay at home unless absolutely necessary for safety during the severe weather conditions.

The Fiji Meteorological Service has reported an active trough of low pressure over the country, bringing prolonged heavy rainfall. Flood warnings are currently in effect for low-lying areas. Limited structural damage has occurred, with two homes in Semo Village and nine in Nalele, Nadroga impacted by rising floodwaters; however, no casualties have been reported. The flooding has made several roads impassable, and six evacuation centers in the Western Division are sheltering a total of 312 evacuees.

The breakdown of evacuee numbers includes:
– Andrews Primary School: 183
– Saioni Church: 33
– Korovuto Secondary School: 14
– Vou Dance Group office: 7
– Nalele Community Hall: 69
– Tavua District Primary School: 9

Mr. Ditoka expressed his gratitude to the police for their efforts in facilitating the safe evacuation of families affected by the flooding.

Concurrently, the Ministry of Health has raised concerns regarding increased risks of waterborne diseases such as typhoid and diarrhea. Dr. Tudravu advised residents to boil drinking water and store it in clean containers. Parents are cautioned to keep children away from potentially contaminated floodwaters. Communities are encouraged to store essential items like food, medications, and hygiene products in elevated locations to prevent further issues.

Mr. Ditoka appealed to families and community leaders to collaborate with the Government, emphasizing the importance of preparedness. He urged households to ensure they have adequate food, water, emergency supplies, and medications for several days. Fijians are reminded to stay alert, adhere to safety guidelines, and prioritize their health and hygiene during this challenging time.

As the nation navigates through this difficult period, the resilience and cooperative spirit of the Fijian community stand out, showcasing the strength and support among its people during times of crisis.
