A severe rain warning has been issued for all regions of Fiji due to an ongoing active trough of low pressure that is bringing extensive cloud and rainfall across the nation.
Flood warnings are currently in effect for areas vulnerable to flooding, particularly alongside and downstream of the Ba, Nasivi (Tavua), and Nakauvadra (Rakiraki) rivers. Additionally, flood alerts have been put in place for all major rivers, while a flash flood warning is active for low-lying regions prone to such events throughout the entire country.
Strong wind warnings have also been issued for coastal areas in the western and northern parts of Viti Levu, covering regions from Sigatoka to Nadi, Lautoka, and areas around Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki. The warning extends to the interior regions of Ba, Ra, Nadroga/Navosa, Serua/Namosi, Naitasiri, and Tailevu North provinces, as well as the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Vatulele, and Kadavu, including nearby smaller islands.
With another trough of low pressure advancing from the west, more rain is expected to impact Fiji from tomorrow through Sunday. Given the already saturated soil conditions, there is a heightened risk of flash flooding in additional areas, especially small streams and regions already prone to such events. Furthermore, rising water levels across major rivers are likely to lead to widespread river flooding, particularly during high tide.
The Fiji Meteorological Service is actively monitoring the situation and will provide updated warnings and forecasts as necessary.
It is crucial for residents to remain vigilant and prepared in the face of this severe weather, ensuring safety measures are in place. Community cooperation and awareness can significantly aid in mitigating adverse effects as the nation navigates through these challenging weather conditions.
In summary, Fiji is currently experiencing severe weather warnings with the potential for significant rainfall and flooding. The authorities are actively monitoring the situation to keep the public informed.
