Fiji Faces Severe Flooding: Roads Closed and Warnings Issued

Spread the love

Heavy rains have caused significant flooding across Fiji, leading to multiple road closures, particularly affecting the Central, Western, and Northern Divisions. The town of Nadi has suffered particularly, becoming impassable, a situation that was notably severe on Christmas Day.

The Fiji Roads Authority has issued warnings for travelers to exercise extreme caution and to heed all road closures due to hazardous conditions. Authorities have also advised residents in flood-prone areas between Sigatoka and Nausori to move to higher ground for their safety.

The Fiji Metservice has continued to warn of heavy rain in the Northern Division, indicating that persistent rainfall may lead to flash flooding in susceptible low-lying regions. On Thursday morning, flash flood warnings were active for several localities, including Dreketilailai, Nayarabale, Vuniika, Qawa, Cawaira, Vunivau, and Labasa town, with smaller streams at risk as well.

Rainfall measurements have been alarming: Dreketilailai recorded 57.5mm of rain within three hours from 4 AM to 7 AM, and Nayarabale reported 104mm over a 24-hour period leading up to 3 AM.

The adverse weather, attributed to a trough of low pressure, is expected to continue impacting the northern parts of Fiji throughout the day. Residents are encouraged to check the Fiji Metservice website for updates.

In the face of these challenging conditions, community resilience is vital. Local authorities and residents are working together to ensure safety and respond to the flooding, showcasing the strength and unity of the Fijian spirit during difficult times. With ongoing cooperation, there is hope that the community will recover and strengthen their preparedness for future weather events.
