The Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, has urged Fijians to minimize movement as the nation faces heavy rain and flooding. During a press conference at the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), he called for the public to cancel gatherings and focus on staying safe at home. Ditoka emphasized that movement should only occur when absolutely necessary, underscoring the importance of public safety during adverse weather conditions.

The Fiji Meteorological Service announced that an active trough of low pressure is bringing consistent rain and clouds over Fiji, with expectations of persistent downpours. Consequently, flood warnings are in effect for low-lying regions. Currently, two homes in Semo Village and nine in Nalele, Nadroga, have suffered partial damage due to flooding, although there have been no reported casualties. Many roads are impassable, and six evacuation centers in the Western Division are currently accommodating 312 evacuees.

The evacuation centers are located at:

– Andrews Primary School: 183 evacuees
– Saioni Church: 33 evacuees
– Korovuto Secondary School: 14 evacuees
– Vou Dance Group office: 7 evacuees
– Nalele Community Hall: 69 evacuees
– Tavua District Primary School: 9 evacuees

Minister Ditoka commended the police force for their efforts in ensuring the safe evacuation of affected families.

Health officials have raised alarms about potential waterborne diseases like typhoid and diarrhea, urging residents to boil drinking water and store it properly. Dr. Tudravu warned parents to keep children away from potentially contaminated floodwaters.

Additionally, communities are advised to store essential items such as food, medicine, and hygiene supplies in elevated areas to prevent loss. Public health officials are actively engaging in awareness campaigns and addressing health concerns, especially in heavily impacted areas like Nadi.

Minister Ditoka appealed to families and community leaders to cooperate with the Government by ensuring their households are equipped with sufficient food, water, emergency supplies, and medications for the coming days. He reminded Fijians to remain vigilant, adhere to safety protocols, and prioritize health and hygiene during this challenging time.

This situation underscores the resilience and communal spirit of Fijians as they navigate these difficult conditions together. By staying prepared and looking out for one another, communities can weather the storm more effectively.

Summary: Fijian Minister Sakiasi Ditoka has advised citizens to minimize movement due to heavy rains and severe flooding. With evacuation efforts underway and health risks rising, the community is urged to cooperate and prioritize safety measures. Public health officials are actively working to prevent waterborne diseases, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and vigilance as the nation deals with this crisis.
