Fiji Faces Setback in OFC U-19 Men’s Championship

Fiji suffered a 3-0 defeat to the Solomon Islands in their second Group A match of the OFC U-19 Men’s Championship, compromising their chances of advancing to the semifinals.

The match was marred by discipline issues for Fiji, who received six yellow cards throughout the encounter.

Early attempts from Solomon Islands attacker James Laena and Jayroll Patty tested Fiji’s defense and goalkeeper Illisoni Koro, but their efforts were thwarted.

However, the pressure eventually paid off when Billy Afi curled a free-kick into the bottom corner just before halftime.

The Solomon Islands continued their offensive push, doubling their lead through a headed goal by Jimson Abana at the stroke of halftime.

The humid conditions in the second half slowed the pace, briefly giving Fiji opportunities to counter.

Despite some promising plays, including a chance blasted over by substitute Eparama Moraica, Fiji struggled to capitalize.

The match was effectively sealed in the 83rd minute with Abana’s stunning scissor kick, marking his second goal and cementing the Solomon Islands’ victory.

Fiji now faces the challenge of regrouping before their final group match against Vanuatu, who are also in contention for a semifinal spot.

The match is scheduled for 11am this Thursday.
