Fiji Faces Rising Sacrilege: Community Urges Respect Among Faiths

The Divisional Police Commander North, SSP Kemueli Baledrokadroka, has dispatched a team to the Vunicuicui Shiv Mandir temple in Labasa to investigate allegations of sacrilege. This action comes following an urgent appeal from Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad, who emphasized the seriousness of the desecration of sacred texts, particularly the Holy Ramayan. Prasad condemned such acts, declaring them inexcusable and intolerable, and expressed concerns about the potential for social and moral decay stemming from religious intolerance.

This incident is part of a troubling trend of sacrilege across Fiji. Recently, locations of worship have come under attack, including appropriate measures taken in response to previous incidents, such as a break-in at the Jai Hind Prahaat Ramayan Faag Mandali temple in Rakiraki. In various other cases, places of worship have faced vandalism, which raises significant concerns about community harmony.

The temple’s community is also taking proactive steps to address the fallout from such disrespectful behaviors. They emphasized that while freedom of expression is vital, it is equally crucial to engage in respectful discourse rather than resorting to acts of vandalism. This situation serves as a poignant reminder of the need for understanding and respect among the diverse faiths within the multi-ethnic and multi-cultural landscape of Fiji.

In light of these issues, local authorities are focused on enhancing protective measures for places of worship and encouraging community engagement to prevent similar incidents in the future. There remains hope that these unfortunate occurrences will stimulate dialogue regarding the preservation of sacred spaces and promote an ethos of respect across various cultural and religious communities. By fostering such discussions, Fiji can work towards a more inclusive and supportive society that honors its diverse traditions.
