The alarming increase in incest cases in Fiji indicates a pressing social issue that requires swift and concerted national action. Shairana Ali, Chief Executive of Save the Children Fiji, has raised concerns about this trend, noting that many alleged perpetrators are close family members, such as fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and step-relatives.

Recent statistics from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions have further underscored the crisis, revealing that 13 out of 14 sexual offense victims were under the age of 18. These figures are not only troubling but also indicative of a significant failure in child protection, as homes—where children should feel safest—are often the site of abuse.

Ali, reflecting on the data, described the current situation as “deeply disturbing” and called for enhanced enforcement of child protection laws, improved support for survivors, and additional resources for both welfare and police services. Save the Children Fiji is also urging community members, including faith leaders and individuals, to report abuse, highlighting the importance of speaking out, even against family members.

Alongside these calls, community engagement and advocacy remain crucial in combating this alarming trend. An increased awareness and proactive stance can lead to a safer environment for all children. Ali emphasizes a stance of zero tolerance toward child sexual abuse in Fiji, underlining the need for a united front to protect vulnerable children from such heinous acts.

The situation reflects a critical need for collective efforts from society to prioritize and safeguard children’s rights, ensuring that every child can grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.
