Fiji Faces Rising HIV Cases Among Men: What’s Behind the Change?

Recent data from the Ministry of Health indicates a rising trend in HIV diagnoses among men in Fiji. Dr. Rachel Devi, the head of family health at the Ministry, stated that this increase has prompted health officials to explore the reasons behind this shift.

Historically, the ratio of HIV cases between men and women in Fiji was almost balanced, with diagnoses roughly equal over the past few years. However, the latest statistics show a significant increase in male cases, with men accounting for nearly 70 percent of diagnoses compared to 30 percent for women.

Dr. Devi suggested that one possible explanation for this trend is a change in behavior or testing patterns among men, including a higher number of bisexual individuals and men who have sex with men. She noted that more men may be getting tested now, which could contribute to the increased numbers.

In contrast, the consistent testing of women during pregnancy has helped maintain a stable rate of diagnoses among them. Approximately 20,000 women undergo HIV testing annually as part of routine antenatal care, which likely plays a role in keeping the female diagnosis rates relatively steady.

The Ministry acknowledges the necessity for further research to better understand this shift in gender distribution. Dr. Devi emphasized the importance of additional advocacy and research in this area, highlighting the concern that exists within this population.
