The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Lynda Tabuya, has expressed deep concern regarding the growing number of homeless children in Fiji. She emphasized that while the government plays a vital role in addressing this issue, the primary responsibility lies within the family and home environment.

Tabuya pointed out that numerous pressures and domestic problems are significant factors contributing to the rise of homeless children. In response to this pressing concern, a Taskforce has been established to investigate the reasons behind the increasing number of children living on the streets. The Taskforce aims to uncover factors such as family pressure, substance abuse, maltreatment, and parental neglect that lead to such circumstances.

Despite the efforts to provide shelter, Tabuya noted a shortage of adequately trained professionals to care for these vulnerable children in rehabilitation centers. While some children have indeed been removed from the streets and placed in these facilities, the lack of sufficient skilled staff remains a serious challenge.

In response to questions from Opposition Member, Praveen Bala, regarding the safe placement of these children, Tabuya assured that there is a Regulatory Order in place ensuring that children are housed in environments that separate those at risk from those who may pose a danger to them.

This situation highlights the urgent need for more decisive actions to protect street-dwelling children, as they represent a significant concern for the government and society at large. It reflects broader issues of homelessness and social inequality that Fiji continues to grapple with.

In light of these challenges, there is hope that the establishment of the Taskforce and the awareness generated by officials like Tabuya will lead to practical solutions, helping to improve the lives of vulnerable children and fostering a supportive environment for healthier family dynamics. This initiative may serve as a catalyst for community engagement and collaboration, promoting a brighter future for Fiji’s youth.
