The Fiji Police Force has reported a concerning 19 percent increase in crime for January 2025 compared to the previous year, with a total of 2,006 crime cases logged. This rise has been notably driven by a significant uptick in cyber-related crimes, particularly financial scams. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu revealed that 218 of the cases were recorded from incidents happening in prior years but officially logged last month.

Among these incidents, 119 involved obtaining financial advantage through deception, showcasing a trend in cyber fraud that has grown increasingly prevalent. A high-profile case involves an individual facing 69 charges for an investment scam valued at approximately $65,000.

While these statistics may seem alarming, it’s essential to note that there has been a decrease in serious offenses, including burglary, rape, robbery, and defilement. Specifically, the Commissioner highlighted declines in cases such as attempted rape, aggravated robbery, and assault with the intent to commit rape.

This situation mirrors trends observed in earlier months, wherein similar statistics indicated ongoing challenges related to public safety, but also the strengthening of community and police collaboration. Indeed, despite the overall rise in crime, the committed efforts of the Fiji Police in engaging with local communities and enhancing transparency offer hope for improved public safety.

With proactive measures and community involvement, there remains an opportunity for law enforcement and residents to work together towards creating a safer environment, underscoring the resilience of the Fijian community in addressing these challenges.
