Tropical Cyclone Rae has moved away from the Fiji region, but in its wake, the Fiji Meteorological Service (Fiji Met) has issued a new severe weather warning. Tropical Depression 10F has now intensified, becoming Tropical Cyclone Seru, which has prompted heavy rain warnings for the entire Fiji group since 8 p.m. last night.
Tropical Cyclone Rae, classified as a Category 2 storm, was situated to the south of Fiji’s waters, causing some minor damage in regions such as Lakeba, Matuku, Cicia, Moala, and Vanuabalavu. Thankfully, there have been no major injuries or fatalities reported.
The ongoing adverse weather brings strong winds and heavy rainfall, particularly concerning for communities that frequently experience flooding. There are risks of localized flooding, disruptions to traffic on minor roads, and potential severe flooding of major rivers that could impact local towns and properties.
Fiji Met has indicated that while heavy rain and thunderstorms are set to continue across most areas, improvements in the weather are expected by tomorrow as rainfall should begin to subside. Nevertheless, residents in low-lying and flood-prone regions are advised to stay alert, as persistent heavy rain may lead to flash flooding.
Community preparedness and collective action have proven invaluable in previous storm situations, demonstrating the strength and resilience of the Fijian people. Local leaders are emphasizing the importance of staying informed through regular updates and taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of residents and their properties.
This weather event highlights the unwavering spirit of the Fijian community. By coming together and supporting one another, residents can enhance their safety and showcase their ability to face nature’s challenges with courage and unity.
