The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) has confirmed the first sighting of the Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) in the nation, marking a significant concern for local agriculture. The pest was discovered on a maize farm in Uciwai, Nadi. Known for its destructive nature, the Fall Armyworm can infest over 80 different plant species, including maize, rice, sugarcane, and numerous vegetables, often leading to severe crop damage.

In response to this detection, BAF has activated its Plant Pest Emergency Response Plan. This includes launching a nationwide survey to assess the spread of the pest and conducting rigorous field monitoring with pheromone traps and scouting in impacted areas. Quarantine measures have also been put in place to prevent the movement of infested crops to other regions.

Farmers have been advised to remain vigilant and report any signs of infestation, which may include caterpillars exhibiting a unique white inverted “Y” marking on their heads, irregular holes in crop leaves, insect droppings (frass), and visible damage in maize plants. BAF encourages the public’s involvement in reporting any suspected sightings through its hotline or by contacting local agriculture offices.

The recent history of proactive measures taken by BAF, such as workshops focused on developing emergency response strategies for such agricultural threats, highlights the authority’s commitment to safeguarding Fiji’s agriculture sector. Workshops held previously involved collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Agriculture and bioscience experts, aiming to enhance inter-agency coordination and preparedness against potential pest outbreaks.

The detection of the Fall Armyworm serves as a crucial reminder of the emerging threats that face agriculture in Fiji. However, with the mobilization of resources and community involvement, there is potential for effective management and mitigation of this pest’s impact, ensuring protection for local farmers and food security in Fiji.
